The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) constituted its women’s wing in Punjab on Tuesday and began a membership campaign. The wing will hold meetings in all 117 constituencies starting with Amritsar on December 3.
Baljinder Kaur has been appointed wing president, Gurpreet Brar Gill general secretary; and Lakhwinder Kaur, and Raj Lalli Gill joint secretaries. Raj Lalli Gill is also the spokesperson. Sonia Victor is secretary in charge of the media and IT, while Amardeep Kaur and Kiranjit Kaur are legal advisers. Amandeep Kaur is senior vice-president and also in charge of volunteers’ training.
Addressing the media at the party office here, Baljinder Kaur said women must be equal participants in the political process, for they are not only 49% of the population but also nurturers. “It is only when women come out that real change takes place. The AAP recognises their power,” she said, adding added that in the coming Punjab elections, the party would field many women.
She claimed that Punjab was going through its worst phase because of a “corrupt and inefficient regime that has pushed the state into debt and drug-addiction”. “If Punjabi women become part of governance,” she said, “we can realise our dream of a joyful and prosperous Punjab.”
