There was hardly any respite to residents on Tuesday as they continued to stand in long queues outside banks and ATMs (automated teller machines), seven days after the government pulled Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 banknotes out of circulation.
Some people had to wait for a couple hours to deposit cash. “The rush increased on Tuesday as banks opened after a holiday,” said a State Bank of India (SBI) official. “I stood in the queue for 30 minutes before the bank opened. I had to wait for two hours,” said Deepika, a government employee.
Panchkula ATMs out of cash
In Panchkula, there were long queues outside banks and post offices, with most of the ATMs not working. ATMs in Sectors 6, 8, 10 and 11 were without cash. A person had to wait at least for half an hour to deposit money in bank.
In Sector 11, ATMs of ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda, Corporation Bank, Yes Bank, Syndicate Bank, IndusInd Bank were not working at 2pm. The only ATMs that were found operational were that of Oriental Bank of Commerce and Bank of Maharashtra. There were long queues outside these ATMs.

HDFC ATMs in Sectors 6 and 8 were not operational till afternoon. There are ATMs which have not been functional since November 8 when the demonetisation announcement was made.

In SAS Nagar, queues outside ATMs refuse to die down as banks and post offices opened after public holiday. The queues thinned by afternoon. The residents continued to be at receiving end as most of the ATMs failed to dispense cash. Only ATMs located on bank premises were working.
