Baljit Kaur, 48, a resident of Barnala, started raising slogans when Modi was speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

The flutter caused by her protest for once diverted the attention of the Prime Minister. This sent the cops on duty in a tizzy. They immediately muzzled her to stop her from raising slogans. They also used a banner reading ‘Punjab Sarkar Zindabad’ as a screen to keep her out of the view of dignitaries at the stage. She was rounded up and whisked away from the venue.

Bathinda SSP Swapan Sharma said the woman, who had allegedly been duped by a chit-fund company, was later released.

The development came as an embarrassment for the top Shiromani Akali Dal–Bharatiya Janata Party leadership present on the occasion.
