Even as the crime against women took a statistical nosedive in 2015, an incident of molestation of two girl students by a professor has been reported from the precincts of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU).

This raises questions about the safety of girl students within the premises of the university and turns the spot light again on the safety of women in the city.

The incident occurred in December last, but the case was registered on Tuesday. The accused has been identified as Sajid Hussain, a professor in the department of microbiology in GNDU. The city police have booked the accused under Section 354 (assault or criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the IPC. He is absconding.

The case has been registered on the complaint of Sukhdev Singh, security officer, GNDU. The complainant has charged the accused with molesting and making physical relations with two girls, both aged around 22 years and students of MSc first semester (microbiology), who were residing in the girls’ hostel of the university.

“According to the security in-charge, previously too there were several such complaints against the accused professor,” said the SHO.

GNDU registrar Sharanjit Singh Dhillon said after the girls’ complaint, the university syndicate suspended the professor on December 31 last year.
