Demanding residential plots for the poor in villages and construction of flats for the labourers in cities and towns, houseless labourers under the aegis of the district unit of the CPI (ML) Liberation staged a dharna outside the office of the additional deputy commissioner (development) here on Friday.

Addressing the dharna, party’s state leader Gurmit Singh Bakhatpura said 25% of the total population in villages and cities was of the houseless people and no government in the state ever tried to address this problem.

He regretted that in run-up to the assembly elections in Punjab, leaders of almost all big political parties make false promises of getting houses to the houseless people and as soon as the elections are over, those promises are forgotten.

Bakhatpura accused the ruling party leaders of bringing panchayat lands under the possession of their henchmen, besides issuing notifications to allot these lands on lease for a long time to the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited, cow-sheds and the national and multinational companies.

He warned that if the administration did not make sincere effort to provide houses to the houseless people soon, the Communist Party of India (Marxist and Leninist) would launch a state-wide stir against the government after the paddy sowing period was over in Punjab.
