The chief minister, however, did not clarify whether the government will also change the law to increase punishment for juvenile accused in rape cases.

He said that the state government will also request the Centre to set up of fast-track courts for dealing with rape cases so that speedy justice can be ensured.

Expressing anguish over the recent incidents of rape in the state, the CM said that though the police was dealing with such cases as required under the law, it had been decided to make a provision for harsher punishment for rape.

Speaking about the “fake rape cases” in the state, Khattar said, “The media should not create sensation by publishing reports on rape incidents without verifying facts.”

SHOWN BLACK FLAGS

About a dozen of Congress leaders planning to show black flags to the chief minister were detained by the police when they were waiting for his cavalcade. Pankaj Punia, a local Congress leader, said that they were protesting against the failure of the government to ensure safety of women.

He also alleged that the present government was not purchasing entire crop of the sugarcane growers in the state. Later, the CM stopped his cavalcade to interact with farmers at the main entrance of the venue.
