At a joint press conference, an emotional Brar sang paeans of the AAP, comparing its national convener and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal to Mahatma Gandhi. “We have not seen Gandhiji but I can see many of his virtues in Kejriwal. He is a messiah,” he said.

Brar had been courting the AAP for several months, sending barely concealed signals through social-media platforms Facebook and Twitter that he wanted to join hands with it. He said he had appreciated the AAP’s work for long. “I believe the AAP is a perfect antidote to the corrupt Akalis and Congress,” he said. “This is the beginning of a mega alliance focussed on (the) 2019 (parliamentary polls). It happened after West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee spoke to Kejriwal.”

Brar also extended the support of former legislator Dr Harbans Lal, Vijay Sathi, Tarsem Jodhan, and Ripjeet Singh Brar, and former Muktsar district Congress president Gurdas Girdhar to the AAP.
