However, 672 students from Ludhiana had scored above 80 per cent in Class 10 in Punjab School Education Board exams. But even then there are few students who have applied to get admission to the prestigious institute.

It is pertinent to mention here that there are several students who are not aware about the admission process in the meritorious school as the school heads concerned or computer teachers have not informed them about it. A student from Panj Garain village, Macchiwara, who reached the Senior Secondary Residential School for Meritorious on Saturday to get admission, requesting anonymity, said, “I was not aware about the admission process. I came to know about it from one of my friends, following which I decided to get admitted to this school. I have scored 83 per cent in Class 10. This school is 55 km away from my village.”

When contacted, Punjab education minister Daljit Singh Cheema said, “For 3,000 seats in six meritorious schools, more than 5,023 students have applied so there is a tough competition this time among the students. It shows that all the seats will be filled. We are recruiting teaching and non-teaching staff for all of the meritorious schools. The schools will get the staff before the initiation of the new academic session. We will start academic session in July and the date to start the academic session for the students will be updated on Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan website.”
