The mayor was talking to mediapersons after returning from the Smart City Congress 2015 held at Barcelona, Spain. The event was held to initiate a dialogue on how to meet the urban needs in developing cities while preserving environment.

Sharma said she shared with the other delegates the projects and steps taken by the Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC), including affordable public transport, promotion of CNG buses and eco-friendly cabs and rickshaws.

The mayor said that being a union territory and capital of two states, Chandigarh has a vast population of government employees. “Therefore, there is an emphasis on encouraging the employees to use public transport instead of private vehicles, and transport authorities have been asked to provide an ample number of buses to ferry employees to and from their offices,”she said. Efforts were also on to provide enough parking spaces and lessen traffic congestion, said Sharma.
