Legislator Gian Chand Gupta on Thursday condemned the Punjab government’s resistance towards the demand of Haryana to get the latter’s colleges in Panchkula, Ambala and Yamunanagar affiliated by the Panjab University (PU).
Gupta said Punjab’s stand on PU and its claim of varsity being its symbol of cultural is wrong and misleading. “Panjab University is the common heritage of undivided Punjab. It belongs to Haryana as much as it does to Punjab,” he said.
“The varsity is the joint property of Punjab and Haryana by the virtue of Section 72 of the Punjab Reorganisation Act,” the legislator added.
Gupta also slammed the previous governments of Haryana and said neither Indian National Lok Dal nor Congress ever claimed their right to the PU due to their misplaced priorities. “But BJP is serious to reclaim this relationship,” he added.
The opposition from the Punjab government came after the Punjab and Haryana high court resumed the hearing in the suo motu petition filed over the poor financial condition of the varsity.
Gupta said, “Haryana should not face any problem while getting its colleges affiliated by the PU as the state government is even ready to give its share of grant to the varsity, as asked by the PU authorities.”

{{/usCountry}}“It is not a political move. We are making these efforts for the betterment of students. There is no major university in the districts of Panchkula, Ambala and Yamunanagar. Panjab University is an obvious choice for students of these districts given to the proximity,” he added.
Meanwhile, he also accused the Punjab government of playing politics at the cost of students’ career and pushing the agenda to assert its authority over Chandigarh.
