A government teacher, 36, victim of rape, has killed herself by consuming poison here, following the police inaction against the suspect, a worker of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
The victim had lodged the complaint on International Women's Day (March 8). Satpal Grover (40) is the Akali worker named in the report. After the teacher took poison, she was treated at a private hospital after being referred from the Bathinda Civil Hospital. On the complaint of her husband, the police now have registered a case against Grover under Sections 376 (rape), 306 (abetting suicide), 354 (criminal force to outrage modesty), 499 (defamation), 511 (attempt to commit offense), and 116 (abetting crime punishable with imprisonment) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Kotwali station here.
"We lodged the complaint with the police on March 8 but they suppressed the matter because of some pressure," said the teacher's husband. "The suspect, who claims to be an influential worker of the state's ruling party, even threatened us. Because he had harassed my wife for a long time, she was forced to approach the police."
On Monday night, the teacher took poison and the family came to know of it on Tuesday morning. Superintendent of police (detective) Amarjit Singh Sandhu passed the query to additional superintendent of police (city) Alka Meena. "The inquiry has opened only now after the complaint and marked already to the station house officer concerned," said Meena. "We would have called the victim for further proceedings today (Tuesday)."
