A fatal attack on a city woman by unidentified miscreants, who reportedly fled with her mobile phone and Rs 1,000 cash while stabbing her around the neck on Tuesday, has belied the tall claims of the Amritsar police about measures taken by them for the safety of women in the city.
The victim, identified as Gurpinder Kaur, a resident of local Kabir Park area, runs a shop.
The incident occurred around 11.30am when the accused came to her shop on the pretext of buying cold drinks, said her family members.
As she moved around to fetch cold drinks, one of the accused allegedly stole her mobile phone, while the other stabbed her around the neck and snatched Rs 1,000, they said.
The victim was immediately rushed to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, where she was undergoing treatment.
Assistant commissioner of police (ACP, west) Deepak Hiloria told Hindustan Times that a case was registered under section 382 (theft after preparation made for causing death, hurt or restraint in order to the committing of the theft) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in this connection. “The matter is being investigated and effort is being made to identify and arrest the accused,” he added.
