Actor Trupti Toradmal is excited about making her Marathi film debut with director Swapna Waghmare Joshi’s Savita Damodar Paranjape. For this film, Trupti completely focused on the director’s vision and stayed away from too many external opinions. The film is based on a popular Marathi play of the same name, which was written by Shekhar Tamhane.
Trupti credits her director for being patient, supportive and encouraging throughout her rehearsals and shoots. She adds that everyone on the set made her feel very comfortable, however, she always felt like she was being treated as a celebrity’s daughter. “No one pointed it out, but I did feel the pressure. I had to live up to my surname, Reematai’s brillant acting and John Abraham’s faith in casting me. So, deep within I had this pressure of doing my best for these names. However, Swapnatai, Subodh (Bhave, actor) and Raqesh (Bapat, actor) were extremely supportive and encouraging,” says the young actor, who immediately became friends with everyone on the sets.
Late veteran actor Reema Lagoo played the lead in the original play. “To be very honest, I did not watch the play nor did I meet Reematai. I did not want to disrespect her by imitating or aping her. I wanted to look at the character from Swapnatai’s vision only. And, yes, I did meet Shekhar sir because he has a first-hand experience of the actual story. I have offered my fresh perspective to this non-fiction story,” says Trupti.
Talking about her first scene on the sets, the actor shares how she had to enact an extremely intense and emotional one, which is when Subodh first complimented her for her acting skills. “We have maintained seven major scenes from the play. They are intense and emotionally draining. When I performed it, Subodh immediately said, ‘Toradmal, ahe! Kaay dedication ahe’ (You have inherited acting genes from your father. What dedication you have!). That was the best compliment to receive and it acted like an energy booster for me,” says the debutant.
