Rajinikanth’s Kaala satellite rights snapped for ₹75 crore
There is always a buzz around Rajinikanth’s films. Looks like his upcoming political debut hasn’t dampened his prospects at the box office. After 2.0 (whose satellite rights went for ₹110 crores) , Kaala too has notched up impressive numbers ( ₹75 crores).
Rajinikanth’s Kaala, which reunites him with director Pa Ranjith after Kabali, is gearing up for worldwide release on June 7. The film’s satellite rights were recently snapped by Star Network for whopping ₹75 crore, according to industry buzz. This is the second highest price paid for a Rajinikanth starrer after Shankar’s 2.0, which was bought by Zee Network for approximately ₹110 crore.
In Kaala, Rajinikanth plays a slum lord-turned-gangster. The film also stars Nana Patekar, Pankaj Tripathi, Anjali Patil, Huma Qureshi and Samuthirakani in pivotal roles. According to director Ranjith, Kaala is about the diverse families that live in Mumbai’s Dharavi slum, which is filled with people from different culture and languages.
In a recent interview, director Pa Ranjith mentioned that the titular character in the film, played by Rajinikanth, is inspired from his grandfather. Rajinikanth plays a character called Karikaalan, and people call him Kaala.
Produced by Dhanush, the film has music by Santhosh Narayanan. Originally slated for release on April 27, the film had to be postponed owing to the recent strike in Kollywood, courtesy a stand-off between Tamil Film Producers Council and Digital Service Providers. On June 7, Kaala will have a simultaneous release in Telugu as well.
