WELCOME TO DAY 3 OF WIMBLEDON 2021: After an exhilarating second day at the All England Club in London, which saw a tearful Serena Williams retire through injury in the first set, Roger Federer surviving a scare, and rain playing a spoil sport, the action moves to the third day of Wimbledon 2021. On Wednesday, defending men's singles champion Novak Djokovic will be in action alongside comeback man Andy Murray, a resurgent Bianca Andreescu among others. 1) Play begins- Off we go!
Play on the third day of Wimbledon began on time under cloudy conditions, with the temperature hovering around 15 degree Celsius (59°F).
Canadian fifth seed Bianca Andreescu started her opening match against France's Alize Cornet on Court Two and Italy's Matteo Berrettini began his first-round clash with Argentine Guido Pella on Court Three.
World number one Novak Djokovic, twice champion Andy Murray and Belarusian second seed Aryna Sabalenka are also in action later, all playing their second-round matches on Centre Court.
2) Another upset! Andrescuu knocked out!
Alize Cornet upset Bianca Andreescu for the second time in two weeks by beating the fifth-seeded Canadian 6-2, 6-1 in the first round at Wimbledon. Cornet broke the former U.S. Open champion five times and sealed the victory by chasing down a shot and hitting a lob that landed just inside the baseline on match point.
3) Berrettini, Nishikori win.
Queen's Club tournament champion Matteo Berrettini remained unbeaten on grass this season by defeating Guido Pella 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the first round at Wimbledon.The hard-serving Berrettini finished with 20 aces against Pella and clinched the win with a running forehand passing shot.
Elsewhere, Japanese tennis star Kei Nishikori soared past Alexei Popyrin 6-4,6-4,6-4. That was quite simple and straightforward.
4) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova wins
French Open runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova cruised into the second round with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ana Bogdan.
The 16th-seeded Pavlyuchenkova took advantage of 16 unforced errors from Bogdan to win in under an hour. She reached her first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros before losing in three sets to Barbora Krejcikova.
5) Shapovalov gets walkover
10th-seeded Denis Shapovalov entered the third round at Wimbledon for the first time after his opponent Pablo Andujar pulled out with a rib injury ahead of their match. The Canadian overcame Philipp Kohlschreiber in five sets on Tuesday. He will now face either two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray or qualifier Oscar Otte in the next round. Shapovalov is playing Wimbledon for the fourth time and had only got past the first round once before, in 2018.
6) Matteo Berrettini wins
Italian seventh seed Matteo Berrettini defeated Guido Pella of Argentina to roll into the second round of Wimbledon with a 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-0 victory on Wednesday.
7) Novak Djokovic storms into the third round
The rematch of the 2018 Wimbledon final ended with another straight-set win for Novak Djokovic. The top-ranked Serb delivered what he called an “almost flawless performance" in beating Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 on Centre Court to reach the third round.
8) Svitolina passes Van Uytvanck test
Third seed Elina Svitolina was pushed the distance by Alison Van Uytvanck before the Ukrainian advanced to the second round with a 6-3 2-6 6-3 victory on Court One.
9) Isner defeated by unseeded Nishioka
Japan's unseeded Yoshihito Nishioka beat 28th seed John Isner 7-6(5) 2-6 6-3 6-7(3) 6-4 to move into the second round after an error-strewn performance from the American. Playing on Court 18, where he beat Nicolas Mahut in 2010 in the longest match in history, Isner fired 87 winners and 36 aces and won four more points than his opponent but made 70 unforced errors to give Nishioka victory.
10) At last, Kyrgios wins
Nick Kyrgios defeated France' Ugo Humbert in a thrilling first-round match on Court 1 at Wimbledon. After 3 hours and 26 minutes and an overnight halt due to London curfew, Australia's Kyrgios overcame the Frenchman 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 9-7
11) Sabalenka fights through for second round
Grand Slam underachiever Aryna Sabalenka is into the third round at Wimbledon for the first time, thanks to a narrow win over a local favorite. The Belarusian advanced by rallying past British wild-card entry Katie Boulter 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
