The Houston Astros are already looking toward a major front-office transition after parting ways with general manager Dana Brown on Monday. With the organization expected to search for a new GM in the offseason, questions have also emerged about manager Joe Espada’s future.

Speculation intensified following Brown’s departure, with reports suggesting that the Astros could make further changes to their baseball operations leadership.

Is Joe Espada leaving the Astros?

According to USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale, Houston has informed Espada that his contract will not be renewed beyond the current season.

The manager was reportedly given the option of either staying with the Astros through the remainder of the campaign or leaving immediately.

Espada ultimately chose to remain with the team and finish the season.

Nightengale later provided an update that appeared to clarify Espada’s immediate status, saying he is expected to stay in the dugout for the rest of the season while owner Jim Crane determines what happens next.

Houston remains tied for the top spot in the American League West, but the team’s recent slide has created plenty of uncertainty around the organization.

The Astros have lost six of their last eight games, with those defeats coming against the Athletics, Angels and Mariners — three teams carrying a combined winning percentage of .448.

Family Emergency forced Espada absence

Espada was also absent from Sunday’s game because of a family emergency, according to ESPN. Astros bench coach Omar López described it as one of the most difficult nights of Espada’s life.

Despite the circumstances, Espada is expected to return for Houston’s upcoming series in New York and remains the team’s manager for now.

Joe Espada Astros contract

Both Espada and former general manager Dana Brown entered the 2026 campaign with contracts set to expire. Astros owner Jim Crane had previously stopped short of committing to extensions for either of them.
