Is Mike Breen retiring? Fact-checking viral social media rumors

An NBA parody account on X falsely claimed ESPN commentator Mike Breen would retire. The viral post has been debunked as a hoax.

A viral post on an NBA parody account on X claiming that ESPN commentator Mike Breen is set to retire caused quite a stir. Titled @ScamCharania, a play on NBA Insider Shams Charania's name, the X account claimed that Breen, 64, will hang his boots after three-decades in broadcasting.

The post went viral, with some reputed NBA journalists also sharing it. However, as it turned out, it was just a fake post made from a parody account.

What Sent The Rumor Mills Spinning

The play-by-play commentator, a regular feature of NBA games broadcasts on ESPN and ABC since 2006, has made no announcements about a potential retirement. The networks he was associated with have also not made any recent comments about his retirement. The rumor exploded on social media after the post on the @ScamCharania X account was reported on by two of ESPN's most reputed voices in NBA, Ramona Shelburne and Marc J Spears. As it became evident later, they thought the post was from the real account of Shams Charania.

Both of them congratulated Breen on his "triple band" 30-year career in sports broadcasting and wished him best for his future. They soon had to delete the post as it was evidently fake. However, by that time it had already gone viral with the rumor mill doing what it does best.
