Google Street View adds scenic Swiss railway route

Google's imaging and mapping service Street View will soon expand to include the spectacular scenery along the railway lines of the Swiss Alps

Google's imaging and mapping service Street View will soon expand to include the spectacular scenery along the railway lines of the Swiss Alps according to an October 20 blog post by Google.

Street View, which provides images of locations on Google Maps, has recently undergone something of an expansion -- even adding parts of the Amazon rainforest.

This latest development may not be quite as adventurous but according to Google it will bring onboard images from the Albula-Bernina line which crosses from Switzerland to Italy through the Swiss Alps.

The line, part of which is also known as the Rhaetian Railway after the transport company of the same name, was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2008. Rhaetian Railway was also invloved with the collection of Google's images.

The images were collected by a system involving nine cameras, all facing in different directions mounted on a tripod on a flat bed at the front of a train.

According to the post on October 20 on Google's official blog these images will be added to Street View "soon."
