Actor Akshay Dogra feels strongly about “mediocrity succeeding” on TV, and “someone with no passion or talent getting paid more than someone skilled”. Expressing his views, he wrote a post on Instagram about actors not getting their due, the way the TV industry works and content on the tube. “I have been thinking about all of this for the last three to four years, but got around to expressing my feelings only now,” he says. The Punar Vivah actor says he put his views via a post but he isn’t “seeking anybody’s approval”. Many of his peers supported his view.
Akshay started his career with the TV show, 12/24 Karol Bagh in 2009, later, he got “a bit of fame” with the 2011 TV show, Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? “But as I wasn’t the lead in the show, I didn’t gain much from its success. Post that, I made it a point to do work that acknowledges my existence as an actor in the industry, not just among the audiences but among peers too. You want them to respect you and your work. Over the years, that hasn’t happened, so I am disillusioned,” adds the Waaris actor.
Akshay, who has also written scripts for TV shows says, “skill is not valued on TV as it’s all about money”. “If it’s a show on a popular channel, no matter what content you put out, it gets noticed. If a mediocre actor with mediocre content is seen daily, people get used to it and they become famous. People think those actors are good while many extremely skilled actors never get the opportunity to play good roles. This is the disparity on TV. Good actors get lost in the crowd. The TV industry is flawed. You have to push yourself for the sake of popularity. I am not saying popularity is bad but we should also remember that we became actors because we had a desire to tell a story, which we seem to be forgetting.”
