Ellen tweeted the picture on October 25, Perry’s birthday, and captioned it, “Happy birthday, @KatyPerry! It’s time to bring out the big balloons!”

Many Twitter users, including more than a few industry personalities, wondered if whether a man had shared the same image, would they have been spared by ‘feminists’.

Actor Michael Rapaport tweeted, “Imagine if Cam Newton or any other Man sent out this tweet & photo,” tweeted Rapaport, who also offered, “If a DUDE said this the World would stop.”

Ellen’s tweet arrives at a particularly volatile time in Hollywood. She had strongly condemned disgraced Hollywood studio boss Harvey Weinstein in light of the recent allegations of sexual assault made against him by dozens of women. “This is not a male thing or a female thing, it is not a Hollywood or political thing, this is a human thing and it happens in the workplace, it happens in families, it happens all over the world and we are all the same,” she said. “We all want the same thing, we want respect, love and kindness. And if I could have those three things and an iPhone X, I’d be happy.”
