The buzz is that after completing work on their upcoming show for Star Plus, and setting the pace for Jhilmil Sitaron Ka Angan Hoga on Sahara One, Rajshri Productions plans to bring back their earliest TV production, Paying Guest, on a leading TV channel. The channels in contention are said to be Sony Entertainment and Colors.
“Paying Guest was my first show, and I don’t think anyone remembers that I assisted on it,” beams Sooraj Barjatya of Rajshri Productions. “I even did a cameo in one of the episodes. That was my first brush with acting and direction. It will be a fun exercise to bring it back now.”
His sister Kavita who heads the TV division in the company, says that in 1985 her company’s idea was to highlight problems faced by the middle class in Mumbai, which was Bombay then. “It was a 13-episode series. There was a time when shows about common people’s lives didn’t have takers. Today, there are two or three channels that concentrate on simple shows. So we will approach them once we’re ready with a reinvented idea,” she states, adding, “The concept of rented homes or paying guests is still around in Mumbai, but the problems faced are not the same.”
Incidentally, Madhuri Dixit who had only worked in a couple of movies then, had done a cameo in the show’s first episode. Would the company bring her back for a ‘guest appearance’ this time too? “We would love to have her back on the show,” says Sooraj, adding, “But now, she’s a big star and may not have the time for our little baby. We’ll be more than happy if she agrees.”
