Pakistan is facing renewed debate over a possible administrative shake-up that could transform its four provinces into 12 to 15 smaller units. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal have highlighted governance reforms, while proposals include creating new provinces or empowering local governments across approximately 160 districts. The debate has also raised questions about Field Marshal Asim Munir’s reported position, political representation, provincial autonomy and the distribution of resources. However, creating new provinces would require constitutional amendments and substantial political consensus. With Sindh opposing division and Pakistan facing economic pressures, the proposal remains politically and financially challenging.
