Ukraine has signed a deal with Finnish technology firms Nokia and ICEYE to develop a sovereign satellite communications system, aiming to reduce its dependence on Elon Musk’s Starlink network. Announced during Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s visit to Kyiv on October 22, the partnership comes as Starlink disruptions highlight the risks of relying on foreign infrastructure for battlefield communications, drones and air defence. Finland and Ukraine also signed seven agreements worth approximately €330 million, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. The developments come amid intensifying Russian attacks and growing European involvement in Ukraine’s defence and infrastructure.
