According to Qatar laws, extramarital sex is illegal; Charlotte Bellis tried to return to New Zealand. After failing to secure a return through the lottery system, Bellis left for Belgium, her partner's nation. However, being a non-resident, Bellis had to leave Belgium, with nowhere to go but Afghanistan.
