Published on Jan 30, 2022 10:10 pm IST
Charlotte Bellis, an ex-Al Jazeera employee, covered the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. After returning to Qatar, where Al Jazeera is based, the journalist learnt she was pregnant. According to Qatar laws, extramarital sex is illegal; Charlotte Bellis tried to return to New Zealand. After failing to secure a return through the lottery system, Bellis left for Belgium, her partner's nation. However, being a non-resident, Bellis had to leave Belgium, with nowhere to go but Afghanistan.
