Car parks, football pitches, beaches: Is Spain losing control of Ceuta’s migrant crisis?

Published on Aug 18, 2026 11:54 am IST

Spain is scrambling to contain a migration crisis in Ceuta after tens of thousands crossed from neighbouring Morocco in late July. Migration Minister Elma Saiz announced 1,500 new temporary reception places, including facilities at a car park and former football pitch. But the move triggered fury among residents, with protesters confronting Saiz and accusing Madrid of abandoning the enclave. Ceuta's regional leadership is also demanding faster action as migrants remain in makeshift camps and public spaces. With pressure mounting on Pedro Sanchez, can Madrid restore order without inflaming an already furious border city?
