Rajya Sabha stood in solidarity and paid homage to India's nightingale and beloved, legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar today. Rajya Sabha Chairperson read out a 5-minute long tribute before adjourning the house for an hour to condole the death of Queen of Melody. In his obituary reference, Rajya Sabha chairperson, M Venkaiah Naidu said, "Lata ji knitted our nation by representing us collectively and each one of us in our singularity. Besides defining the golden standard of playback singing through thousands of her melodious songs in many languages, she captured every mood, moment and journey of our nation for over seven decades." Lata Mangeshkar was a nominated member of the Upper House from November 1999 to November 2005. An RTI has revealed that the iconic singer never touched any allowances she received as the Member of Rajya Sabha. Due to ill health in her 6-year term, Lata Mangeshkar could make it to the house for only 12 days and asked only one question on the derailment of trains. She had reportedly once said, “My tenure in the Rajya Sabha was anything but happy. I was reluctant to be inducted into Parliament. In fact, I pleaded with those who urged me into the Rajya Sabha to let me off… What did I know about politics?” Watch for more details.
