A surrogate hound in the US has given birth to seven half-pound puppies, the first dogs ever conceived in a test tube. They are now the world's first litter of puppies ever born by in-vitro fertilization. The puppies, born on July 10, are a mix of beagle, Labrador and cocker spaniel and are now healthy 5-month-olds. Researchers say this IVF technology could help save endangered breeds of dogs.
In vitro fertilization, the process of fertilizing an egg with sperm outside the body, is also widely used to assist human reproduction these days.
