The indefinite strike called by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) entered its ninth day on Tuesday morning. The shutdown's effect could be seen in the streets and markets of the town as the whole region is in a volatile situation. There have been many cases of tourists and visitors being stranded because of the shutdown. Earlier as many as 81 NCC students were rescued by the army who were stuck because of the unavailability of transportation. The protests erupted with regard to the demand of a separate state, 'Gorkhaland', by the GJM workers. The outraged agitators also opposed the alleged imposition of Bengali as compulsory language in state schools.
