Union Home Minister Amit Shah and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh commented on Vinayak Savarkar, who is back in the spotlight after the Bharatiya Janata Party promised to push for a Bharat Ratna for him, ahead of the Assembly elections in Maharashtra. Shah credited Savarkar for being the first one to label the 1857 revolt as a fight for freedom. Manmohan Singh said that the Congress was not opposed to Savarkar, but his 'Hindutva ideology'.
