Russia has summoned Japan’s ambassador after Tokyo strongly protested President Vladimir Putin’s August 13 visit to Iturup, one of the disputed southern Kuril Islands. Moscow calls Iturup an integral part of Russian territory, while Japan calls it Etorofu and maintains it is part of its “Northern Territories,” claiming it on historical and legal grounds.
