Football legend Lionel Messi received the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports in Oviedo, Spain, recognising his extraordinary football career, record-breaking achievements and charitable work supporting disadvantaged children. Princess Leonor presented the award, praising Messi’s exceptional talent, decision-making and commitment to teamwork. Messi, who captained Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title and has won a record eight Ballon d’Or awards, becomes the first footballer to receive the Princess of Asturias Sports Award individually.
