French President Emmanuel Macron announced a voluntary youth military service set to begin in mid-2026, aimed at strengthening national defence as global threats intensify. Speaking at the 27th Mountain Infantry Brigade base in the Alps, Macron called the initiative a “major asset” for both civic and military readiness. The programme will recruit paid 18- and 19-year-olds for 10-month service exclusively within French territory. Starting with 3,000 participants in 2026, the number is expected to rise to 10,000 by 2030, with a long-term target of 50,000 by 2035. The €2 billion effort aligns France with other European nations reviving military preparedness.
