Maldives reportedly proposed President Mohamed Muizzu’s India visit later this month before the current diplomatic row unfolded. Male also discussed Muizzu’s possible India visit during later’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Dubai on the sidelines of COP28 in December 2023. Maldives ministers and other leaders made derogatory remarks against PM Modi and India, sparking a major backlash both in Delhi and Male. Muizzu govt suspended three deputy ministers over this after Indians started boycotting Maldives which heavily relies on Indian tourists.
