Ahead of Carney’s India visit, Canada moves to strip 26/11 mastermind Tahawwur Rana’s citizenship

Canada is reportedly initiating proceedings to revoke the citizenship of Tahawwur Rana ahead of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s upcoming visit to India on February 27. Rana, accused of involvement in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks that killed 166 people, was extradited from the United States to India in April 2025 and arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). According to media reports, the citizenship revocation is not directly tied to the terrorism charges but stems from allegations that Rana may have provided false information during his Canadian citizenship application process in 2001. Authorities are said to be reviewing his case on the grounds of misrepresentation. The move comes at a significant diplomatic moment as Carney prepares for talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The visit aims to elevate and expand India-Canada ties across trade, energy, and artificial intelligence. Carney is also expected to meet business leaders to discuss investment opportunities in Canada.
