Independence Day: PM Modi on Iran, Ukraine wars - 'some spread rumours; those in AC rooms said…'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his 2026 Independence Day address, spoke about the impact of the Ukraine and West Asia wars on India’s energy and fertiliser supplies. He said some people had spread fears that India would face shortages of petrol, gas and fertilisers, but preparations made by the government were now showing results. Modi highlighted the cost of fertiliser subsidies, saying a urea sack costing around ₹3,000 is provided to farmers for ₹300, while DAP costing around ₹5,000 internationally is supplied at ₹1,350. He also defended his push for Atmanirbhar Bharat, saying globalisation had been promoted while self-reliance was criticised.
