Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his 2026 Independence Day address from the Red Fort, spoke about the government’s efforts to build a Maoist-free India. He paid tribute to police personnel and security forces who lost their lives fighting Left-Wing Extremism, while stressing that the threat had not completely disappeared. Modi said armed Maoist groups had been weakened, but warned that an ideological challenge remained. Referring to what he described as “mental Maoists”, he called for them to be identified and isolated.
