The 2026 US midterm elections have delivered major political gains for Democrats and a series of historic firsts in American politics. Keisha Lance Bottoms is set to become the first Black woman elected governor of a US state, Abdul El-Sayed has made history as the first Muslim American elected to the Senate, and Chris Pappas is set to become the first openly gay man in the chamber. Deb Haaland and Peggy Flanagan have also broken barriers for Native American representation, while Gina Hinojosa’s victory makes her Texas’s first Latina governor.
