Sonia Gandhi slams Modi govt over suspension of Rajya Sabha MPs

- Lashing out at the Modi government, Congress president Sonia Gandhi termed the suspension of 12 Rajya Sabha MPs as 'outrageous' and 'unprecedented’. The Congress veteran added that the suspension from the entire Winter Session of Parliament 'violates the Constitution’. Sonia Gandhi was addressing a Congress parliamentary party meeting on Wednesday morning. Several Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury were present at the meeting. Sonia Gandhi also maintained that the government's regret for the Nagaland killings is not enough. Sonia demanded 'credible steps' to prevent any future occurrence of such 'ghastly tragedies’. The meeting comes amid protest by opposition over suspension of the 12 MPs from Rajya Sabha. The Upper House on the first day of the Winter Session suspended as many as 12 of its members. MPs have been suspended on account of 'unruly and violent behaviour' during the monsoon session. Suspended MPs include six from Congress, two each from TMC and Shiv Sena, one each from CPM and CPI. The suspension of MPs has also led to major disruptions in the Upper House and frequent adjournments.
