As Prime Minister Narendra Modi leaves for South Africa to attend the BRICS Summit, some member nations are likely to push for a common BRICS currency to counter the West. However, India has downplayed the possibility of a common currency. Addressing the media ahead of PM Modi’s departure, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said that discussions have so far focused on how to increase trade in respective national currencies, which is considerably different from a common currency concept.
