Last week, Indian Army lost four of its soldiers in yet another terrorist attack in Rajouri-Poonch belt. Two army vehicles were ambushed by an unknown number of terrorists at Dera Ki Gali. The terrorists reportedly mutilated the bodies of two soldiers and allegedly decamped with four rifles. The attack has shaken the security setup as it was more brazen than the previous attacks and appears to have been meticulously planned. The attack indicates that Rajouri-Poonch region, which borders Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, is emerging as a major security challenge for Indian forces. In this report, we highlight the factors that are possibly behind the deadly surge in militant attacks in Pir Panjal region of Jammu and Kashmir.
