UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced plans for a new National Centre for Information Defence as he addressed the United Nations General Assembly, warning of hostile state information attacks. Burnham said the centre would work to detect, attribute and disrupt threats targeting Britain’s information environment, while specifically accusing Russia of spreading disinformation and attempting to interfere in the UK’s 2019 general election. The announcement comes alongside a new UK-US defence partnership focused on AI and protecting critical infrastructure. Burnham has also urged stronger support for Ukraine’s air defences as European security concerns continue to grow.
