'Savarkar fought for freedom but...': Cong MP Singhvi defends Rahul's attacks on Hindutva ideologue

Rahul Gandhi stoked a fresh row and virtually created a quake in Congress-Shiv Sena alliance in Maharashtra with his blunt new attack on V.D.Savarkar a few days ago. The Congress MP, who is leading Bharat Jodo Yatra, targeted Savarkar for his apology letters to the British in prison during India's freedom struggle. The remarks, however, did not go well with Shiv Sena, the alliance partner of Congress in Maharashtra, and whose leader Uddhav Thackeray publicly disapproved of Rahul's stand on Savarkar. In an interview to Hindustan Times, Congress MP and senior leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi defended Rahul Gandhi, saying he had stated facts but went on to say that Savarkar, like other Indians of that time, also fought for freedom from the British.
