Taliban leader Anas Haqqani visited a shrine dedicated to 10th century ruler Mahmud of Ghazni. Posting pictures of the trip on Twitter, Haqqani called Mahmud Ghaznavi a 'renowned Muslim warrior and Mujahid of the 10th century'. Haqqani claimed that Mahmud 'established strong Muslim rule in the region from Ghazni'. However, the most shocking part was a direct taunt at India, when Haqqani hailed Mahmud Ghaznavi for 'smashing the idol of Somnath'. Mahmud was the first ruler of the Turkic Ghaznavids dynasty, and ruled from 998 to 1030 CE. He is believed to have attacked the Somnath temple, which is in current-day Gujarat, around 17 times.
