UK parliament erupts over Trump's Venezuela move; ‘Does the Starmer govt approve of this?’

Published on Jan 06, 2026 06:02 pm IST

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said Britain would “shed no tears for Maduro” but insisted the UK had no involvement in the U.S. military operation that captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Speaking in the House of Commons, Cooper faced criticism from MPs over whether the government supported the action and whether it breached international law. While reaffirming the UK’s commitment to a rules-based international order, she stopped short of explicitly endorsing or condemning the U.S. operation, which Washington described as a “surgical law enforcement action.” The move has drawn strong criticism from BRICS and Global South nations, while European responses have been more muted.
