Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide has warned at the UN General Assembly that a dangerous belief is gaining ground: that power matters more than principle. Citing eroding respect for international law and declining trust in cooperation, Eide said the United Nations faces three linked challenges—uneven enforcement of international law, delayed or withheld funding, and an overly complex institutional structure. He backed the UN80 reform initiative, called for stronger and more independent UN leadership, and urged changes to the Security Council, including permanent African representation. “It is our turn to face the monsters of our time,” Eide told member states.
