After Venezuela, Trump eyeing Greenland? Why US President’s arctic obsession has NATO & EU rattled

After Venezuela, a question is echoing across capitals from Washington to Copenhagen: where does Donald Trump strike or pressure next? As Latin America reels, Trump’s attention appears to be shifting north, toward Greenland. What began as a joke in 2019 is now being framed as a national security necessity. But this time, the consequences are far bigger. Greenland isn’t just ice and isolation. It sits at the heart of the Arctic, rich in rare earth minerals, critical shipping routes, and strategic military value. The U.S. already operates a major base there. So why does Trump want more and why now? More importantly, what happens when pressure is applied not to an adversary, but to a NATO ally? For the first time in its history, NATO may be facing a threat from within. Denmark is warning that if the U.S. uses force against another alliance member, “everything stops.” Europe is rattled. Greenlanders are uneasy. And Washington insists this president is not bluffing. Is this about China and Russia? Resources and leverage? Or a new doctrine where alliances matter less than interests? And if NATO can be tested from the inside, does the transatlantic alliance survive the Trump era?
