Amid India-China tension, Tibet govt-in-exile poll process to begin | Explained

The Tibetan government-in-exile is preparing to hold elections next year. The Tibetan Election Commission has announced dates for voter registration - from September 1 to October 15, 2020. The government-in-exile, officially called Central Tibetan Administration, was set up after the Dalai Lama, the community's spiritual leader, fled his homeland after Chinese invasion in 1959. He was given refuge in India with the government-in-exile setting up headquarters in Himachal Pradesh's Dharamshala. Beijing has refused to recognise the CTA. The upcoming elections will be held to reportedly elect the President and the Members of Parliament.The poll process has begun amid sustained tension between India and China, driven by the latter's military aggression along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh, and subsequent refusal to adhere to disengagement agreements. India has also banned dozens of Chinese apps over national security concerns, and also toughened commerce rules like foreign direct investment and bidding for government contracts by firms from neighbouring countries.
