Chile declares state of emergency as wildfires engulf large parts

Updated on Jan 23, 2017 02:31 pm IST

Chile is under a state of emergency as more than a dozen wildfires have scorched 123,500 acres. One of the largest has consumed about 60,000 acres in and around Pumanque, a rural area some 140 kilometres south of the capital Santiago that is near some of Chile's vineyards. The fire has encroached on towns, factories and vineyards. The head of Chile's CONAF forestry service, Aaron Cavieres, said the fires were caused by humans, but that it could not be determined whether they were set intentionally.
