US President Donald Trump has reportedly warned that Washington could raise tariffs on Indian imports if New Delhi does not cooperate on the Russian oil issue. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “good guy,” Trump said India wanted to keep the US President happy amid ongoing trade negotiations. The remarks come months after the US doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50% and amid tensions over India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. India has denied claims that it assured Washington of halting Russian oil imports, maintaining that its energy policy is guided by market conditions and domestic needs. Trump’s latest comments risk adding fresh strain to India–US relations even as both sides continue diplomatic engagement.
