A fierce diplomatic showdown erupted at the United Nations as Iran and Israel traded explosive accusations amid escalating military conflict. Iran’s Ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, condemned the U.S.-Israeli strikes as a “calculated act of aggression,” accusing them of targeting civilians, senior officials and even the Supreme Leader. He argued the attacks violated Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and warned that if such actions go unchecked, the foundations of international law would be undermined. Iravani insisted Iran is acting under Article 51 of the UN Charter, exercising what he described as its inherent right to self-defence, while denying deliberate targeting of civilians or neighbouring states. In a sharp rebuttal, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, defended the joint operation with the United States, saying Israel’s objectives are clear: prevent nuclear weapons, neutralise ballistic missile threats and dismantle Iran’s proxy network. Danon accused Tehran of deliberately targeting civilians and residential areas, including strikes in Beit Shemesh near Jerusalem.
